The Smoking Students and the Shady Tree
One day in a college which had a noble program to mitigate the effect of global warming namely conservatory campus, there were two big shady trees which always became the favorite place for students to read a book or just to have a chat. Without the students knew, the trees were able to communicate each other using their own language. The first tree said : “ I love to give my healthy oxygen to the students who are sitting underneath me.”, The second tree said : “ So do I, we have symbiosis mutualism with human being, they exhale carbondioxyde that we need, we give them fresh oxygen in return.”Unfortunately, not all students obeyed the noble conservatory mainly on the point of no smoking in campus area.
The first tree gazed upon a group of students who were indifferently smoking in campus area. He said to the first tree,” look at those ignorant guys! How silly they are, we have provided them with healthy air, they themselves inhale poison into their own lungs.” The second tree replied “not only that my friend, I guess that they also throw the cigarette buds into the soil instead of the garbage can.”
Then that group of people approached the trees to have shady place to smoke and to have chat. The first student said, “ how can a man produce an enjoyable thing like cigarette, look! I can have a donnuts-like smoke from my cigarette.” And he laughed proudly after doing so. There were about seven people in that group. Each of them smoked at least two cigarette while they were sitting underneath the trees. What the second tree worried about came into reality, those seven men threw the cigarette buds recklessly on the soil exactly beneath the trees. The second tree said, “Oh my God, just like what I have guessed before, they threw the buds recklessly.” The first tree said, ”They don’t have any idea that the buds are not made from cotton but other non-biodegradable chemical substances just like plastic, it is venomous for the soil we stand, the nutrients that we absorb to be able to live from the soil will be polluted, Oh God!” Those were really worried about the condition. Unfortunately those smoking guys were not only dropped by to smoke under the tree just once in a blue moon but almost everyday they came, smoke and threw recklessly. Thus, the buds were piling up on the soil beneath the trees and the trees almost everyday absorbed the polluted substances from the ground as their food. Just like human being who consumed unhealthy food everyday, their body would grow weaker and weaker. The first tree asked the second tree, “How is your condition my friend?” the second tree replied, “My roots can’t hold me any longer, my trunks start falling one by one, and my leaves are no longer green moreover they fall piece by piece everyday, I think I shall die soon my friend.” Then The first tree screamed in agony, “we have given them the things they need most in their life but now they give nothing but death to us, oh God! Please forgive all of those people! They don’t have any idea about what they have done, and only on Your Mercy, I shall return!!!”After that the first tree fell into the ground which was continued by the second tree.
All of the students who beheld that accident were both astonished and sorrowed. They felt that they had wasted something precious. They now were aware that they didn’t realize the cigarette buds which were piled up under the falling tree could kill the big tree. One of the students said, ”How could we assassinate the creature which always voluntarily and sincerely gives us the thing we need most in order to stay alive, the Oxygen, even without we beg them to do so, and we only give them death in return, we are such unthankful mean creature!!!”.They felt really guilty about it and then they began to clean the buds and put them in the garbage can. And the next day they brought so many new tree seeds to be planted in their campus area as the part of their sin redemption and realization of green movement action. They also put a strong sanction for those who smoke in the campus area.
Few months later, the campus looked so green and fresh again. No students smoked inside the campus. And all of the trees smiled happily.
