The Importance of One Man-One Tree Movement in a Conservatory Campus
As we know that environmental degradation has become the major global issue to be concerned. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We must take a real action now for instance by doing one man-one tree movement, why?
The global average air temperature near the Earth's surface rises 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the last century. According to the research conducted by The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it happens due to the increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations via the greenhouse effect. It means that human activity for instances human factories that produce excessive smoke, the vehicles that we ride everyday produce emissions to the environment, rainforests cutting and burning can release carbon dioxide into the earth's atmosphere enhance the greenhouse effect as this gas builds up the atmosphere. What happens to our earth right now is the responsibility of human being.
The increase in the average temperature of the earth's near-surface air and oceans is projected to occur in continuation. This increasing global temperature will cause sea levels to rise, and is expected to increase the intensity of extreme weather events and to change the amount and pattern of precipitation. Other effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields, trade routes, glacier retreat, species extinction and increases in the ranges of disease vectors.
And what kind of entity which is able to stop the effect of global warming?. The answer is tree. Trees are able to absorb over 90 per cent of the rainfall in their leaves and mosses. They are able to slow down water run-off by gradually releasing the water over time into streams and rivers. This helps to control soil erosion and flooding. Trees can influence both our local and global climates. For example, between 50 and 80 per cent of the moisture in the air comes from the vast area of trees. Rainforests are vital to the Earth in helping to recycle carbon dioxide and oxygen. Trees are able to remove carbon dioxide from the air and return oxygen in its place. This is why trees are often called the earth's ‘lungs'.
Unfortunately, vast area of trees has been devastated during the last decade by development of human industries. We must make up for our mistakes, we must revitalize the earth by conducting reforestation in every area in our country. The example is UNNES which has conducted one – man one – tree movement as the tangible to participate in the action of decreasing the effect of global warming.
At last, after seeing how severe our environment right now and the trees which are able to reverse the effect of global warming are now being massively down-sized. Our government should really empower the one man-one tree movement in every campus in Indonesia like what has been done initially by UNNES.
